Mania, also known as manic syndrome, is a psychiatric condition characterized by an abnormally elevated state of arousal, affect, and energy level. It is often associated with rapidly changing emotions and moods, highly influenced by surrounding stimuli. The symptoms of mania include elevated mood, flight of ideas, pressure of speech, increased energy, decreased need for sleep, and hyperactivity. Mania can be dysphoric as well as euphoric and can intensify to irritability, anxiety, or anger. According to the [[world-health-organization|World Health Organization]], mania affects approximately 1% of the global population. The [[national-institute-of-mental-health|National Institute of Mental Health]] estimates that nearly 4.4% of the US population will experience a manic episode at some point in their lives. Mania is often treated with a combination of medications, such as [[lithium|Lithium]] and [[valproate|Valproate]], and psychotherapy.
